Growing up in Canada, hockey is a big part of every kid’s life. It certainly was for me. I am not sure if I chose to be a goaltender or if goaltending chose me. But from the age of five years old I have been a goalie. In addition to hockey, I played baseball competitively until I was 25 years old, mostly as catcher, including representing Canada at the Big League World Series when I was seventeen.
I was fortunate to be athletic and have a passion for hockey and baseball, which together helped me reach the highest professional level. At the higher level of sports you begin to see what differentiates a top player (forward, defenseman, goalie, fielder, catcher) from a bad player. Typically, it is not just skill or technique but the ability to anticipate what is going to happen. The ability to “see the game.”
Playing college hockey and competitive baseball sparked my interest in kinesiology and human movement. I was always trying to understand how athletes are able to play the way they do. How can movement be made to be faster or stronger or quicker, etc.?
After college I took the next step using my knowledge of kinesiology to help other people. I chose to study to become a chiropractor, which led me to the Chicago area and the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard. While attending school, I began coaching young aspiring goalies which I continue to do today. I pass on my experience and knowledge of goaltending and also how to move more efficiently. Watching these athletes improve and reach higher levels by applying my coaching methods is a very rewarding experience for me.
In my ongoing search for new ways of developing and improving athletes I have added a new training opportunity to my practice: Vision Training. Known as the “cutting edge for training the elite athlete,” vision training works on improving the visual abilities of the athlete. Vision Training helps the athlete see objects more clearly, track objects better, sharpen peripheral awareness, judge distance and speed of objects better and enhance hand-eye and foot-eye coordination.
I am excited to help athletes of all sports be able to play better.
